Wearing neutral colors is very on trend right now. Neutral colors are hues that don’t dominate an outfit—they provide a balanced, versatile foundation that lets other colors shine. They are generally easy to pair with many other colors. They tend to blend rather than compete, making them ideal “supporting players” in a wardrobe or design palette.
Some neutrals will be more complimentary to you personally than others. Each season’s color palette has a set of neutrals that will work to make them look youthful, energetic, vivacious and even open to connection with others. Here’s a peek at what works for each season:
🌸 Spring: light, warm, fresh, clear
🌿 Summer: soft, cool, blended, smoky
🍂 Autumn: rich, warm, saturated, earthy
❄️ Winter: crisp, cool, high-contrast, bright
The opposite is also true; often people think neutrals are universally flattering, but colors like navy, gray, black, beige and brown aren’t actually great on everyone. Black can be overpowering, cool gray can drain warm complexions, and camel can make someone look sallow. It’s actually not at all unusual for someone to come into the studio saying something like, “I know black isn’t a good color on me, but I’m not sure what I should be wearing instead.” So we figure that out!
If you know your season, this is my nudge for you to pull out your fan and do a neutral review. Do you have enough of them in your closet? Are there any you don’t have at all? Are there any pieces you are holding on to that you know aren’t in your season? Make a list for yourself and go on a mission to add or replace as you find pieces that suit your season and style.
Your best set of neutrals will harmonize with all the other colors of the season, making pieces you add to your wardrobe in these colors total workhorses. The other beautiful thing about that is knowing they will be pieces you reach for often gives you the confidence to invest in those pieces so they fit well, feel great, and last a long time.
I’ve even created a stash of suggested neutrals for each season. Find that HERE. Hope it’s helpful and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have gems you think I should include.
Pantone even chose a neutral for their color of the year in 2026. Here’s House of Colour’s take on Cloud Dancer.
While a whole outfit of neutrals is currently on point and I totally support you in building an outfit that way if it’s fun for you, neutrals are intended to support you, not replace you. If your closet has too many of them, it can leave you feeling uninspired or give a sense that you’re hiding in your clothes. Every season gets a quarter of the colors of the universe to wear so branching out to add color can breathe life, interest, uniqueness, and confidence into your world.
